College Guidance
Cooper Yeshiva High School for Boys
Goldie Margolin High School for Girls
For all of our students, college or university study is the door to opportunity
for the future. Although many of our students will go to Israel for a year upon
graduation, college guidance is an important part of the entire high school
experience. Feinstone Yeshiva of the South students develop their personal
responsibility by engaging with teachers early in the process. Discussions
about future career options, college choices, and appropriate course
preparation all contribute to the student's personal growth in this area.
Writing college essays are not only a challenge, but one of the highlights of
the English courses at the Yeshiva. Students have the expertise of teachers who
have many years of experience in preparing students to show their very best
efforts in portraying their own personal successes.
Our school is a Sunday test site for the
PSAT and
SAT. We provide resources that
enable students to make wise choices about their futures. Students take the PSAT
in ninth, tenth, and eleventh grades and teachers work with students to help them
prepare for the verbal, mathematics, and writing components of the Scholastic Aptitude
Test.
"College Nights" are an essential component of the college application process along
with our College Guidance Handbook, compiled by the FYOS staff and updated
each year. The handbook, which is given to all juniors and seniors and their
families, is a detailed guidebook through the college application process.
Several College Nights are held each year with outside experts joining school faculty
to give students and families pertinent information and to address any questions
that may arise. Guidelines and pointers for interviewing, campus visits, filling
out applications, and writing essays are all explained. A copy of this year's
handbook, along with other relevant data is available below in pdf form.
Student essays are carefully reviewed by faculty and insightful, positive recommendations
are written by counselors and faculty to give our college applicants the best possible
opportunities for college admissions. Our small size is a critical factor in this
process because it enables our faculty/staff members to have first-hand knowledge of
each student and his/her strengths.
For students choosing a yeshiva or seminary abroad, there are opportunities to
meet with representatives of many Israeli Yeshivas and seminaries on campus.
The school hosts the representatives who have an opportunity to speak to the
entire student body as well as to meet with individual students. In these
meetings and with the advice of graduates and family members who have traveled
this road before them, students hone their ability to discern the fine
differences among the various offerings.
Upon their return, students become the wise elders who then share their wisdom.
Faithful alumni become valued resources to the guidance process.
